Audience
Contacts
Store the people you email, with their properties, segments, and topic choices.
The contact list
Open Audience → Contacts. The list shows Email, First name, Last name and Created, with an Unsubscribed badge where it applies. Search by email or name, pick a date range, filter by subscription (All contacts, Subscribed, Unsubscribed) or by segment, and export the list as CSV. Every team member can add, edit, and delete contacts.
Select rows to act on several contacts: Edit → Add to segments or Subscribe to topics, or Delete.
Add contacts
Click Add Contacts:
- Add Manually: paste addresses separated by commas or new lines, optionally choose a Segment, and click Add. Addresses that already exist are skipped.
- Import CSV: choose a CSV file, check the Column mapping (each column can map to
email,first_name,last_name,unsubscribed, an existing custom property, or Ignore), optionally choose Add to segment, and click Import. Rows that match an existing address update that contact.
In a CSV, unsubscribed accepts true, 1, yes, y or false, 0, no, n. Name the column unsubscribed: a column named subscribed is also mapped to unsubscribed without inverting its values. The import cannot create new properties; add them on the Properties page first, or use the imports API, which can.
Imports run as background jobs of up to 100 contacts. They continue if you close the browser, and the dialog waits until they finish, then shows how many contacts were created and updated. Invalid rows are skipped. Importing the same file again merges by email.
Edit a contact
Click a contact to open it. On the Details tab:
- Profile: First name, Last name, the Subscribed switch, and one field per custom property. Changes save automatically. Turning Subscribed off stops broadcasts to the contact, even for topics it opted in to. The email address cannot be changed.
- Segment membership: add the contact to segments or remove it. Contacts never see segment names.
- Topics: the contact's subscription to each topic. Without an explicit choice, the topic's default applies.
The History tab lists the contact's Emails, Broadcasts and Received messages. Delete removes the contact from every segment and cannot be undone; suppression history is kept separately.
Use the API
Create contacts with create contact and a full-access key. Creating an address that already exists merges the supplied fields and memberships.
{"email":"ada@example.net","first_name":"Ada","properties":{"plan":"pro"},"segments":[{"id":"YOUR_SEGMENT_ID"}]}Address lookup is case-insensitive; URL-encode an email used as a path ID.
Things to know
- Emails are trimmed, lowercased, and up to 254 characters. Names and property values are up to 1000 characters.
- Changes fire
contact.created,contact.updatedandcontact.deleted. A write that changes nothing fires nothing, and CSV imports (dashboard or API) fire no contact webhooks at all. - Pickers for contacts, segments, topics and properties search the server, so entries beyond the first loaded ones can be found.
