Audience
Topics
Let contacts choose which kinds of email they receive.
Create a topic
Open Audience → Topics and click Create topic:
- Name and optional Description, which contacts see on the preference page.
- Default subscription: Opt-out (new contacts are subscribed until they unsubscribe) or Opt-in (new contacts stay unsubscribed until they opt in).
- Visibility: Public (shown on the unsubscribe preference page) or Private (hidden from contacts, useful for operational mail).
Edit Topic can change the name, description, and visibility. The default subscription cannot change after the topic is created. Deleting a topic removes every contact's choice for it.
Use it
Choose the topic under Subscribe to when you write a broadcast. Contacts who are not subscribed to it are skipped, and the broadcast's unsubscribe link lets a contact leave just that topic. Transactional API sends can pass topic_id for the same check.
A contact's choice overrides the topic's default. Change it on the contact's page, with Subscribe to topics on the contacts list, through the API, or let contacts change it on the unsubscribe page.
Use the API
{"name":"Product updates","default_subscription":"opt_in","visibility":"public"}The API names the default the other way round from the dashboard: opt_in means contacts are subscribed by default (the dashboard's Opt-out), and opt_out means they are not (the dashboard's Opt-in). A topic created through the API is private unless you set visibility.
Limits
- A team can have up to 100 topics.
- Through the API, names are up to 50 characters and descriptions up to 200. The dashboard allows 200 and 1000.
