Templates
Template editor
Write reusable emails, publish them, and send them from the API or automations.
Create a template
Open Templates and click Create template. A draft named Untitled Template opens in the full-screen editor. Every team member can create, edit, publish and delete templates. You can also create one from an existing email: Clone as template on a broadcast, or Convert to template on a sent email.
Edit it
- Name: click the name in the top bar to rename the template.
- Envelope: above the body, set From (a sender on a verified domain), an optional Reply-To, the Subject, and optional Preview text. They are the defaults for sends that do not set their own.
- Body: write in the Visual editor, or switch to the HTML code editor. Choosing Edit HTML turns the email into hand-written HTML; Edit visually reads it back into the visual editor, dropping markup it does not understand.
- Variables: insert contact properties and system values from the Variables menu. See template variables.
The editor saves as you type and shows Saving… and Saved; there is no Save button.
Test email sends the current draft to one address (your own by default) with [Test] in front of the subject. Test sends fill no variable values, so a variable without a fallback makes the test fail.
Publish
Click Publish. The draft is copied into the published version that API and automation sends use. After you edit a published template, the button reads Publish changes; until you click it, sends keep using the previous published version. Published (disabled) means there is nothing new to publish.
The ... menu has Edit alias, Duplicate, Revert to draft, and Delete. Revert to draft removes the published version, so sends that use the template fail until you publish again. Deleting a template does not change emails already sent.
Send it
Refer to a published template by its ID or alias in send email, with a full-access or sending key:
{"template":{"id":"welcome","variables":{"name":"Ada"}},"to":"ada@example.net"}from, subject and reply_to default to the template's. A send cannot combine template with html or text. The Send email automation step sends templates too.
Limits
- HTML and text up to 256 KiB each.
- Name up to 256 characters, alias up to 128, subject up to 998.
- An alias uses lowercase letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, and is unique in the team. A new template's alias is generated from its name.
